Car Ignition Repair & Cylinder Replacement

Is your car key stuck or refusing to turn in the ignition? Worn-out lock housing? Our mobile locksmiths repair and replace vehicle ignitions on-site across Toronto & the GTA.

Few automotive issues are as frustrating as putting your key in the ignition only to find it frozen, jammed, or refusing to turn. Sticking ignitions are a major hassle, and tow-truck operators often suggest towing your car directly to a dealership. At GTA Car Keys, we bypass that stress. We offer fully mobile, dealer-tier ignition repair and key cylinder replacement directly at your location anywhere in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area. We disassemble, rebuild, or replace steering column ignitions on the spot — saving you high towing fees and dealer surcharges.

Common vehicle ignition issues we solve

Our locksmith trucks are equipped with specialized extraction tools, replacement electrical switches, housing assemblies, and complete factory pinning kits. We solve the following common failure modes daily:

  • Key Refuses to Turn: The small brass tumblers (wafers) inside the lock cylinder have worn down or bent. We extract the cylinder and rebuild the internal tumblers with factory-spec brass wafers.
  • Key Stuck in Ignition: A broken mechanical release or jammed internal tumblers prevent the key from releasing. We safely extract your key without destroying your steering column or lock housing.
  • Broken Key Extraction: If your key snapped off inside the cylinder, we extract the broken blade segment and cut a brand new replacement key on-site using our CNC milling machinery.
  • Failing Electrical Ignition Switch: If your key turns smoothly but the vehicle won't crank, or if it suddenly stalls while driving, we can swap out the electrical switch component behind the mechanical key lock cylinder.

Specialized Honda ignition cylinder rebuilds

If you own a 2002–2012 Honda (including Civic, Accord, CR-V, Odyssey, Pilot, or Element), you are likely familiar with their high-security split-wafer ignition failure. Because Honda keys use a central cut pattern (laser-cut or sidewinder), the lock's internal wafers wear down extremely quickly. When one wafer bends or collapses, the ignition locks up completely.

Our Solution: Rather than forcing you to pay $600–$900 at a dealership for a brand new ignition assembly (which would also require separate door and ignition keys), our mobile technicians carry complete Honda wafer-rebuilding kits. We remove your ignition cylinder, disassemble it, replace all 10 internal worn wafers with brand new heavy-duty wafers, clean and lubricate the housing, and re-pin it to match your original door key. You get a brand new, smooth mechanical ignition lock and keep your original keys.

Upfront pricing and warranty on all work

We pride ourselves on transparent, honest rates. Before our technician is dispatched from our North York depot, we verify your vehicle's year, make, and model and quote a flat, all-inclusive rate over the phone. Every repair, rebuild, and new ignition cylinder we install is covered by our comprehensive hardware and labor warranty.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my car key turn in the ignition?

There are two main reasons a key won't turn. First, the key itself may be worn out or bent, preventing it from aligning the lock wafers. Second, and more commonly, the internal brass tumblers (wafers) inside the ignition lock cylinder have worn down, bent, or collapsed, jamming the cylinder. GTA Car Keys can diagnose the problem and rebuild or replace the ignition cylinder right in your driveway.

Can you repair a Honda ignition key lock on-site?

Yes. Honda high-security 'sidewinder' ignitions (used in 2002+ Civic, Accord, CR-V, Odyssey, Pilot, and Element) are notorious for wafer wear. The keys wear down and the internal wafers collapse, making the ignition lock up completely. Our mobile locksmiths carry complete Honda ignition rebuild kits. We disassemble your steering column, remove the lock cylinder, replace the damaged wafers with brand new ones, and rebuild it so it works perfectly with your original keys — saving you hundreds compared to the dealer.

What is the difference between ignition repair and ignition switch replacement?

The ignition lock cylinder is the mechanical part where you insert the key. The ignition switch is the electrical block located behind the cylinder that sends power to the starter motor and computer when the key turns. If your key won't turn, you need cylinder repair or replacement. If your key turns easily but the engine won't crank, or if the car stalls randomly while driving, you likely need a new electrical ignition switch.

How much does ignition repair cost in the GTA?

Mobile ignition repair or cylinder rebuilding typically ranges from $180 to $320 depending on the vehicle make and model. Full ignition lock housing and cylinder replacement (if the housing itself is cracked or stripped) ranges from $280 to $450. We provide flat, all-in quotes over the phone with no hidden service fees.

Will I need a new key after you repair or replace my ignition?

No. When we repair or replace an ignition cylinder on-site, we custom re-key (re-pin) the new cylinder to match your original door keys. This ensures you maintain a single-key system for both doors and ignition, avoiding the hassle of carrying separate keys.
