Water resistance is not a universal promise
Do not assume a car key or fob is waterproof unless the manufacturer documents that rating for the exact item. A metal blade and an electronic remote have different components, and a complete key may include both. Appearance alone does not establish how an item will respond to immersion.
Use the instructions for your key
Dry the outside gently and consult the vehicle's owner information. Avoid heat, repeated button presses, or forcing a sealed case apart. Do not use a generic guide to rinse an electronic board with alcohol or water: construction and care instructions vary, and a fixed drying time does not establish that the inside is dry.
Record what happened
Explain whether the exposure involved rain, immersion or laundry, and whether the key was already damaged. Say which functions still work and whether another key is available. These facts help describe the problem without assuming that a non-responsive fob has a destroyed chip or definitely needs replacement.
Discuss the next step
If operation is unreliable, ask about assessment before buying a new fob. Keep the vehicle year, make, model and current key details available. A working spare can be useful, but do not rely on a recovered key without knowing that it operates as expected.
