What determines the price of your car key

  • Key type — basic transponder, remote-head, laser-cut sidewinder, or push-to-start smart key. Each generation adds cost because of more sophisticated chip encryption and harder-to-source blanks.
  • Vehicle make and model — German makes (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi) cost more because of dealer-pin retrieval and EIS / FEM / CAS module requirements. Most domestic and Asian makes are at the lower end of the range.
  • All-keys-lost vs. spare — adding a spare to a working key is cheaper than starting from scratch, because we don't have to retrieve the immobilizer pin or do a full re-pair sequence.
  • Time of day — our prices are the same throughout our open hours; we don't charge night or weekend surcharges (we're closed Saturday).

Why we don't charge a separate service-call fee

Some shops quote a low key price and then add a $50-$100 "trip charge" plus a "programming fee" plus a "diagnostic fee." We bundle everything into one number so you know the real total before we leave the depot. The price we quote on the phone is the price you pay.

Locksmith vs. dealership: who's cheaper?

For nearly every common make and model, a licensed mobile locksmith is 30-60% cheaper than the dealership for the same key. You also avoid towing the vehicle, which is often $150-$300 on its own. The dealership advantage used to be access to anti-theft module programming — but properly equipped locksmiths now have the same tools and credentials for almost every vehicle on the road.

How payment works

We accept e-transfer, Visa, Mastercard, and cash. Payment happens after the technician has cut, programmed, and tested your new key — never before. If for any reason the key doesn't work, you don't pay until it does.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about car key replacement pricing in Toronto & the GTA.

How much does it cost to replace a car key in Toronto?

Most car key replacements in Toronto and the GTA cost between $140 and $480 depending on the type of key. A basic transponder key runs $140-$220, a remote-head key runs $190-$280, and a push-to-start smart key runs $260-$480. We always quote a flat all-in price over the phone before dispatch.

Why do car keys cost so much to replace?

Modern car keys aren't just metal — they contain encrypted transponder chips that have to be programmed to your specific vehicle's anti-theft system. The cost reflects the key blank, the dealer-grade programmer, the specialized software license, and the technician's expertise. We're still typically 30-60% cheaper than a dealership.

Is a locksmith cheaper than the dealership?

Yes. A mobile locksmith is typically 30-60% cheaper than a dealer for the same key. You also save the cost of towing your car to the dealership, which can be $150-$300 on its own. We come to you instead.

Do you charge a service-call fee on top of the key price?

No. Our quote is flat and all-in — it covers the key, the cutting, the programming, and the on-site visit. There is no separate trip charge, parts charge, or programming fee.

How much is a key fob if I already have one and just need it programmed?

Programming-only (you bring an OEM or aftermarket fob you already purchased) is $80-$140 for most vehicles. Some German and high-security vehicles cost more because of dealer-pin retrieval requirements.

How much to unlock a car in Toronto?

Mobile car unlock service in the GTA is $80-$130 for damage-free entry. We don't use slim-jims — only professional inflatable wedges and long-reach tools.

Do you offer free quotes?

Yes. Call (416) 900-3961 with your vehicle's year, make, and model and the type of service you need. We give you the all-in price on the phone before sending a technician.
